Actor Morgan Freeman and his producing partners premiered the next episode of their series “The Story of God” on Jan. 12, 2017, at Loyola Marymount University.
“I want to do projects that are not done,” Freeman told the crowd of students, faculty, staff and guests who filled Mayer Theater on the LMU campus. “That tell the stories we don’t generally tell. In American history, you’d think that nobody did anything but white people; that’s the lesson we get in the movies. And I know different. I want to tell those stories, deep stories about the real fabric of American life.”
The second season of “The Story of God with Morgan Freeman” begins with the episode titled “The Chosen One.” Freeman and crew explore the religious phenomena of the charismatic person, those people who have found their calling and who lead others by example. The episode profiles a 9-year-old Buddhist believed to be the reincarnation of a revered lama; a Christian missionary who was once a prisoner in North Korea; Chief Arvol Looking Horse of the Dakota/Lakota/Nakota People; and other deeply religious practitioners.
After the screening, Freeman, Lori McCreary and James Younger, fielded questions from Amir Hussain, professor of theological studies at LMU who has consulted on the series and appeared in three episodes. Hussain asked about their company, Revelations Entertainment, and the making of the episode.
“One of the things we saw very clearly in season one was that not only are believers asking these questions, scientists ask these questions as part of their work,” said McCreary. “Like, ‘How did life happen?’ ‘How did we get here?’ They are studying this, looking in all the nooks and crannies for the unanswered questions.” She added that she’s pleased to now have some tools to talk to her skeptical friends. “Like the monsignor at the Vatican Papal Academy of Science told us: The way he thinks about it, the Big Bang is the scientific explanation of creation, and the Bible stories are the spiritual explanation of creation– and they coexist quite nicely.”
“The Story of God with Morgan Freeman” airs on the National Geographic Channel on Monday evenings.
