Message from the President

Dear LMU Community,

I am saddened to inform you that Alex D. Aloia, emeritus professor of education, has died. Alex passed away June 3 at Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance after a long illness at the age of 90.

Alex taught at LMU for 36 years until his retirement in 1990. He founded the Loyola Guidance Center and was chair of the Department of Education, a forerunner to the School of Education. He was also director of the School Counseling and School Psychology programs. Alex served as president or chair of 35 civic and charitable organizations over 50 years, including the Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters organization, the United Way, the Academic Decathlon and the Los Angeles County Mental Health Commission. He earned his doctorate in educational psychology from USC, his master’s degree also from USC and his bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois.

Alex is survived by his children, Tony, Linda and Mike; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.  Condolence cards may be sent c/o School of Education, Office of the Dean, 1 LMU Drive, University Hall Suite 2100, Los Angeles CA 90045.

Private services were held June 19 at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.  The family asks that donations be made in Alex’s name to the Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters, 1530 James M. Wood Blvd., Los Angeles CA 90015.
