Philip Dorin

Message from the President
August 24, 2018

Dear LMU Community:

I am saddened to share that Philip Dorin, professor of electrical engineering and computer science in the Frank R. Seaver College of Science and Engineering, died after a long illness on Aug. 22, 2018. He was 70 years old.

Professor Dorin was the first director, and the driving force, of the Computer Science Program, and he twice served as chair of the Computer Science Department. During his 47-year career at LMU, Professor Dorin served his students, department, and college as chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from 1982 to 1985 and graduate director from 1984 to 1985. He also worked extensively with the University Honors Program for more than 40 years. An excellent scholar, mentor, and teacher, Professor Dorin maintained friendships with his former students over the decades. He joined LMU in fall 1971, was promoted to associate professor in 1983, and to professor in 1988.

In parallel with his academic contributions and pursuits, Professor Dorin was a pianist and a member of the Marymount Institute Jazz Trio and often played at campus functions.

He earned his Ph.D. in computer science from UCLA in 1982, his Master of Science in electrical engineering from Northeastern University in 1971 and his B.S. in electrical engineering from MIT.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Professor Dorin’s honor to: Tower Cancer Research Foundation, the ASPCA, or the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

Please keep Phil, his family, and his many friends in your prayers.

Sincerely,

Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D.
President
