December 6, 2016
Dear LMU Community:
I am saddened to share with you that Warren Sherlock, professor emeritus of communication arts, died on Nov. 28, 2016, at his home in Manhattan Beach after a long battle with cancer. He was 87 years old.
Warren joined LMU in 1960 after serving in the U.S. Army as a combat photographer during the Korean War and several years as a high school drama teacher. During his 38-year career at LMU, he created and served as chair of the Communication Arts Department, served as chair of the Speech Department, and served three times as interim dean of the College of Communication and Fine Arts. In 1981, he was the second holder of the John C. Cosgrove Professorship in Communication Arts. Warren wrote an award-winning play, “The Black Pope,” about the life of St. Ignatius Loyola, and his play “The Wake of Nellie McCabe” was produced off-Broadway to acclaim. Warren also directed numerous stage plays and acted on stage, TV, and in films.
Professor Sherlock earned his B.A. at UC Santa Barbara in 1955, and his master’s degree in English and drama at Catholic University of America, in Washington, D.C.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. at American Martyrs Church, 624 15th Street, Manhattan Beach, California, 90266. A reception in the church hall will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Warren’s memory to the College of Communications and Fine Arts general fund.
Please keep Warren, his children Mary, Brian and Scott, his eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren in your thoughts and prayers.
Sincerely,
Timothy Law Snyder, Ph.D.
President
